San Francisco Chronicle/Communist Leah Garchik
Fifty years after serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, David Kleinberg went back there last year, to pay homage to buddies who had died, and hoping to perform his monologue, “Hey, Hey, LBJ,” about that time.
He was more than disappointed to find that no producer dared approach the Communist Culture Committee, from whom approval would be required. He was able to perform it only once, in someone’s home, with the provision that no Vietnamese would be invited and that the faces of audience members — all expats — would be blurred in pictures.
That performance took place on the 41st anniversary of the fall of Saigon.
